Essential Maths Year 7 – Updated 2019

Essential Maths by David Rayner & Michael White (published 2008-2010)
Our latest Essential Maths series was published between 2008-2010, building on the success of the previous series. The books are divided into Higher (H), Core (C) and Support (S) levels for Years 7, 8 & 9.
- The books are written for pupils by experienced teachers who know the problems which children encounter.
- Children enjoy the subject because they can work at their own pace at the right level so they succeed on a regular basis.
- Functional maths is incorporated throughout the books with an emphasis on questions with a real world context.
- Easy to use and excellent value at just £9.50 each. (£8.08 after 15% discount)
- Separate homework books are also available at £3.90 each.
Although there is no set path through the books, the topics appear in the order suggested in the National Numeracy Strategy guide. Broadly speaking, the book is split into 6 units. Each unit of work can be used during one half-term with appropriate revision material at the end of the unit. Many topics are reviewed later in the book, in line with the NNS guide.
Puzzle activities and mental arithmetic tasks can be found between the units, to be used whenever appropriate. Investigations appear regularly throughout the book. Ideas for discussing and exploring themes from the ‘history of mathematics’ are included between each pair of units.
No textbook will have the ‘right’ amount of material for every class. The authors believe that it is preferable to have too much material rather than too little. Opportunities for functional maths are incorporated into activities throughout the book.
Most work is broken down into two parts. ‘M’ exercises are aimed at all children. ‘E’ exercises provide extension work. Pupils may move naturally onto this work after an ‘M’ exercise or teachers may judge that a number of students should only tackle ‘E’ exercise.
The ‘Mixed Review’ at the end of each Unit can be used to assess the pupils progress (APP).
